The conversation is moderated by Professor Katherine Wilhelm, Executive Director of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute, Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law.

SPEAKERS:
Dr. Bonny Lin
Bonny Lin is a senior fellow for Asian security and director of the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Previously, she was the acting associate director of the Strategy and Doctrine Program of RAND Project AIR FORCE and a political scientist at the RAND Corporation, where she analyzed different aspects of China’s foreign and defense policy and U.S. competition with China, including China’s use of gray zone tactics against U.S. allies and partners. Her research advised senior leaders in the Department of Defense, including military leaders at U.S. Pacific Air Forces and U.S. Army Pacific. Dr. Lin also served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 2015 to 2018, where she was director for Taiwan, country director for China, and senior adviser for China.
Dr. Lin has testified in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an adjunct at the RAND Corporation and Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA). Dr. Lin holds a PhD in political science from Yale University, a master’s degree in Asian studies with a focus on China from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard College
Mr. Riley Walters
Riley Walters is a senior fellow at Hudson Institute specializing in international economics and national security.
His areas of expertise include international trade policy, investment regulations, technology and innovation, cybersecurity, and the intersection of economics and national security. He is also an expert on east Asian political affairs, primarily focusing on Japan and Taiwan.
Mr. Walters is also a senior non-resident fellow with the Global Taiwan Institute. Prior to joining Hudson, he was a senior policy analyst and economist in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation. Previously, he was a Penn Kemble fellow with the National Endowment for Democracy, a George C. Marshall fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a national security fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and a Kim Koo fellow with the Korea Society.
Mr. Walters is a prolific writer, contributing extensively to policy papers and media outlets including The Hill, Japan Times, Global Taiwan Brief, The Messenger, The Diplomat, the Washington Times, the National Interest, Geopolitical Intelligence Services, and others. Mr. Walters has also appeared extensively on domestic and international news, television, and radio services including TaiwanPlus, Nikkei Asia, Segye Daily, Al Jazeera, Radio Free Asia, Kyodo News, Politico, and more.
Mr. Walters has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from George Mason University. He has previously lived in Japan, including one year living with strawberry farmers in Kumamoto prefecture and one year while studying at Sophia University in Tokyo. He is fluent in Japanese.

Katherine Wilhelm
Katherine Wilhelm is executive director of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute, an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law, and editor of the institute’s online essay series, USALI Perspectives. She is an expert on China’s legal system, public interest law organizations, and civil society. Over the course of nearly three decades in China as a lawyer and journalist, she worked for the Ford Foundation, Yale Law School’s Paul Tsai China Center, a leading U.S. law firm, the Far Eastern Economic Review, and The Associated Press. She earned a JD and master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University.
