Bypassing Hormuz: The New Geopolitics of Energy

Bypassing Hormuz: The New Geopolitics of Energy

Virtual Salon

Thursday, October 22, 2026 | 12:00 – 1:15 PM ET

Nearly eight months after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February, the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint that once carried roughly a fifth of the world’s oil, remains largely closed to commercial shipping. After a brief rebound in September, Iranian attacks on vessels have surged to record levels this month. Tehran has also struck the very routes meant to bypass the strait, from the UAE’s Fujairah export hub to Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline. The disruption has kept oil above $100 a barrel and raised the cost of everything from gasoline to fertilizer. In response, countries are rethinking where and how they get their energy: rerouting supplies through pipelines and rail, turning to new suppliers in Africa and beyond, and investing in renewables they can produce at home.

How is the Hormuz crisis reshaping the geopolitics of energy, and how are countries finding alternative sources and methods to meet their energy needs? And could these remedies, ironically, loosen the world’s dependence on Hormuz for good?

Join us on Thursday, October 22, from 12:00 to 1:15 PM ET for a virtual salon featuring Dr. Carolyn Kissane, Associate Dean and Clinical Professor at the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs and Founding Director of NYU’s Global Energy, Climate, and Sustainability Lab.
