James Upton is an investment management executive with extensive experience managing senior institutional client relationships and developing new business across the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. He spent the past 17 years at Morgan Stanley Investment Management as Chief Strategic Officer for the Emerging Markets Equity business as a Managing Director. With a background in global macroeconomic and corporate analysis, he has published research and launched innovative investment strategies, including a Frontier fund to cover such countries as Kenya, Vietnam and Bangladesh, among others. Previously, he was the Latin American equity strategist at Credit Suisse, an investment strategist at Northern Trust Global Investments and an international economist at Merrill Lynch. He has spent time in nearly 60 countries to conduct research, generate business and participate in global conferences. James received a BA in History from Middlebury College and an MA in Economics and US Foreign Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University. Before graduate school, he was a reporter in Mexico City with United Press International and a fiction contributor at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont.
