H.E. Mr. Hasan Kleib, former Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations

Mr. Hasan Kleib was appointed as the Director General for Multilateral Affairs on 25 October 2011. Prior to his appointment as Director General, he served as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York from August 2010.

His active roles in the United Nations forum, are among others as the Chair of the 45th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development; Co-Chair of UN Civilian Capacity in the Aftermath of Conflict; Vice President of the 65th United Nations General Assembly; Friends of the UN Secretary General on Myanmar, on Food Security, and on Climate Change; and Executive Board Member of UNDP, UN Women and UNICEF.

From 2007 to 2010, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, including when Indonesia held the seat of non-permanent member of the Security Council from 2007-2008. At that time, he also served as the Alternate Head of Security Council Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, Security Council Sanctions Committee on Democratic Republic of Congo, and Security Council Sanctions Committee on Liberia.

From 2004 to 2006, he served as the Director for International Security and Disarmament Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Jakarta. From 2000 to 2004, he was the Head of the Political Division at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C. He served as the Head of the Disarmament Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Jakarta, from 1996 to 2000, and before that, from 1992, he was assigned as an official in Politic Division at Indonesia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. From 1988 to 1992, he served as the Head of the Middle East Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a career diplomat, Mr. Kleib joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987.

In his capacity as the Director General for Multilateral Affairs, he is also the Special Envoy for President of the Republic of Indonesia for United Nations High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on Post 2015 Development Agenda and the Chair of several working groups, among others, Commission of Truth and Friendship Indonesia-Timor Leste, Working Group on Climate Change Negotiation, and Working Group on United Nations Peacekeeping Mission Centre.

Mr. Hasan Kleib received his master degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade at Monash University, Australia, in 1997. In 1986 he finished his bachelor degree in International Relations from Padjadjaran University in Bandung, Indonesia.
